Philosophy
Our world is moving in the direction of BIM. No longer are 2D drawings sufficient for the demands of consultants that need to analyze a building thoroughly before it is built. No longer are contractors willing to deal with costly construction mistakes that can be prevented with proper analysis of a model. Owners and contractors are wondering: “where is the BIM?” With the increasing complexity of buildings and the systems they contain, project stakeholders need the ability to collaborate, and an information rich 3D model (a Building Information Model) has proven itself as the solution to this need.
Digital Vision was born out of a passion for technology in the architecture and building industry. Our founder and president, John Stebbins, first saw 3D CAD in 1989 and it changed his life. He saw the beauty of an entirely three-dimensional model representing a built work of architecture and immediately understood the implications this meant for the AEC industry. He has been standing behind a vision of a more streamlined professional practice for 21 years.
All Roads Lead To BIM – it is our mission to both build and travel these roads.
Our Team
John Stebbins, Associate AIA, is the founder and President of two virtual design and construction companies: Digital Vision Automation, Inc. and 3D VirTec in Irvine, CA. He has been a leader in transitioning the building industry to Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems since 1989. Digital Vision has been a 3D technology provider and software trainer in southern California for over 21 years and has been on the front lines of transitioning the Building Industry from 2D drafting to 3D BIM. 3D VirTec provides Virtual Design and Construction services to the Building Industry, including 2D to 3D conversion to BIM.
As a member of the AIA Orange County California Professional Practice Committee, John has facilitated a seminar series entitled “BIM in Practice”, an ongoing quarterly forum giving local individuals and firms the opportunity to share their BIM experience and know-how with other industry colleagues.
In the 80s John developed and taught classes in sustainable design, solar energy, and home-building at Saddleback College, Chapman College, University of Wisconsin, and Ganahl Lumber School of Woodworking and Homebuilding. In the 90s, he taught multimedia and digital design classes at UCLA Extension and provided computer training to numerous film industry professionals, teaching at the innovative “Hollywood Hands-on” computer learning center. At the UCI Extension Digital Arts Program, he originated the first classes in multimedia and initiated a pioneering class called “The Power of Digital Media in Architecture”.
John has earned a BS degree in Urban Planning from Iowa State University and has 12 years of experience as a design-build general contractor. He also spent three and a half years in Europe studying cultural history, the French and German languages and was a European tour guide.
Caitlin Leal has been a part of the Digital Vision team for 9 years and counting. That time has given her many wonderful experiences as well as opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. Starting out as an assistant and secretary, she has grown to become the current Director of Customer Service, Market- ing, and Operations.
With no previous background in the industry Caitlin has, in her time with Digital Vision, pushed the limits of her comfort zone, working in multiple facets of the business - sales, support, customer service, marketing, research and the management of day-to-day business operations. Her knowledge of the architecture and construction arenas increases every day, and her experiences and passion have made her one of the most important members of the Digital Vision team.
Caitlin is a proud wife and mother. On weekends she can be found taking nature walks, baking, and enjoying time with her family. Movies, music, and a good book are always on her agenda, as well as an unbridled devotion as a mother.
